Families Forever

Guiding Families through Change

Families Don’t End....Marriages Do

Effective parenting through a time of change can lessen the negative effects.

According to the United Way of Butler County, one in five children living in the county resides in a single parent home. Only 26% of families meet the definition of a traditional family.

The negative effects of divorce and separation on children can include:
• Irritability
• Fear and stress
• Trouble sleeping
• Change in eating habits
• Physical aggression, including hitting, biting, and bullying of other children
• Difficulties in school setting
• Lack of interest in age appropriate activities
• Withdrawn and socially isolated
• Difficulty separating from caretakers
• Difficulties with peer relationships

Help your child cope with the affects of divorce and separation in the following ways:
• Reassure your child that they are loved and not to blame for the separation.
• Provide children with structure and reasonable rules that give a sense of security.
• Ask your child about their feelings – be a good, non-defensive listener.
• Be helpful and supportive, even if that means putting your own feelings aside.
• Find supportive services for your children and for yourself.
