Program Volunteer Children's Services Lifesteps' children's programming includes Child Care, Preschool, and Developmental Learning in Beaver and Butler Counties. Volunteers enjoy reading stories to the children, assisting with group activities and working one-on-one with children who may be developmentally delayed. Volunteers are required to obtain Act 33 and Act 34 clearances, an annual physical, a bi-annual Mantoux TB test, and two personal written references. Geriatric Adult Day Health Services The program is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Butler. Individuals participate in a variety of activities suited to their individual physical and mental abilities. Those requiring specialized care or medications are attended to by trained staff members. Participants also receive meals supplied by Lutheran Service Society. Volunteers are needed to help with meal preparation, lead small groups in activity games, word games, puzzles, crafts, knitting, and sewing projects. In addition, volunteers work one-on-one with individuals who are unable to participate in group activities. Although it is not required, volunteers may obtain Act 33 and Act 34 clearances. Seniors In Transition (S.I.T.)/Senior Friends The Seniors In Transition program in Butler County and Senior Friends in Indiana County helps older adults with mental retardation make the transition into their retirement years. Many of these individuals work in sheltered workshop environments and need help developing interests, skills, and friendships which will make their retirement years enjoyable. Volunteers are matched with an individual based on mutual interests, hobbies,
and location. Act 33 and Act 34 clearances are required. Basic Education and Socialization Training (B.E.S.T.) Lifesteps' B.E.S.T. programs in Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, and Indiana Counties meet daily, Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Individuals are young adults with mental retardation who come to Lifesteps for training in basic life skills, communication, and socialization. Volunteers assist Lifesteps' staff with individuals or with small groups, helping them attain their goals in the various aspects of the program. Also needed are volunteers to demonstrate crafts, musical or artistic skills, and teach individuals about various jobs people do in the community. Volunteers for this program are required to obtain Act 33 and Act 34 clearances. |
