Lifesteps Helps Make Families Stronger

EDITOR’S NOTE: The following is a profile of an agency of the United Way of Beaver County, which is in the midst of its annual fund drive.

For more than 80 years, Lifesteps has provided western Pennsylvania communities with services for individuals and families.

Lifesteps helps improve the quality of life for many by providing preschool classes for children with developmental delays and offering testing, evaluations and therapies. The agency also provides day care for older adults who become frail or mentally unstable, and community homes and day programs are offered for adults who are mentally and physically challenged.

Lifesteps believes that stronger families build stronger communities and is dedicated to fulfilling its mission of “helping individuals and families with life’s changing needs.”

Lifesteps began serving people with disabilities in 1923 as the Easter Seal Society. As community needs increased and evolved, the agency’s board of directors made the decision in 1994 to become an independent agency called Lifesteps. The agency has grown to offer a diverse range of programs and services in the 10-county area of Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Mercer, Washington and Westmoreland.

Lifesteps of Beaver County offers family-focused services and programs for all ages. Through community support and help from the United Way, it reaches out to thousands of children and families. Programs and services available are: free child check developmental screenings; speech, language and developmental testing and therapy; child care for children of all abilities; prescriptive preschool classes; developmental kindergarten; and community homes and day programming for adults who are mentally challenged.

The Primary Development Program at Lifesteps allows for kindergarten-aged children with special needs to participate in a small-group setting with one-on-one instruction from teacher’s aides and therapists.
